Being a checkout woman, standing in scent
all day, opening a box, allowing musk
and loneliness over the countertop.
Customers think, What is that smell
of want and cardboard, as if the store
seals her boundaries in tape.
Hope will grow into the eyes
of a modern man, with a bald spot
and a soft spot for her to believe in,
for her to check out.
