Bob Macauley is one of only a few hundred pediatricians in the United States specializing in palliative care for children with life-threatening illness. He simultaneously attended medical school and divinity school at Yale, and was ordained an Episcopal priest at the same time he began pediatric residency at Johns Hopkins. After working for a few years as a pediatric hospitalist in Connecticut, New York, and rural Uganda, he spent fifteen years on the faculty at the University of Vermont, directing the department of clinical ethics as well as founding the pediatric palliative care team. In 2017 he was appointed the inaugural Cambia Health Foundation Endowed Chair at Oregon Health and Science University, where he is the medical director of the Bridges pediatric palliative care program.
He and his wife, Pam, have been married for over two decades, and have four kids, Catie (22), Noah (20), Lucy (18), and Charlotte (14), as well as two wonderful rescue dogs, Hazzie and Grover. In his spare time, he enjoys writing, baking bread, scuba diving, and travel.
